MIMING UNDER THE HILL

It is the night of the Rasa dance and Krishna has suddenly disappeared.
The Gopis are desperate and search for Him in the forest asking the plants, the trees, the deer, who has seen the beautiful son of Nanda Maharaja, He has run away after stealing their hearts.
SB 10.30.6[The gopis said] O asvattha tree, O plaksa, O nyagrodha have you seen Krishna? That son of Nanda Maharaja has gone away after stealing our minds with His loving smiles and glances.”
Some gopis start to mime His pastimes and one of them raises the shawl over her head simulating the Govardhan Hill and remembering this pastime when Krishna raised the Hill.
SB 10.30.20“Don’t be afraid of the wind and rain” said one gopi “I will save you” And with that she lifted her shawl above her head."
They were there under the Hill exchanging glances with Krishna, without never having to take their eyes off of Him.  This was an unique occasion for the Gopis : they could look at Krishna day and night for seven days, as also all the Vrajavasis along with the cows were also staring at Him with widened eyes while He held up the Govardhan Hill.

SB 10.25.33“While Krishna was lifting Govardhana Hill, Radha and other beloved gopis, unnoticed by others were intimately associating with Him by exchanging secret glances from a distance.”Purport by Sri Visvanath Chakravarti Thakura.
So, the inspiration of this lyric was to paint in vivid colors the combination of these two pastimes : the search of the Gopis in the night of the Rasa dance and the loving exchanges at the time of the lifting of Govardhan Hill.

Drowned by the water of separation
feelings of burning sensation
I ask the birds, the flowers and trees
The One with blue skin have you seen?

O friend, hold your shawl
over us, cover all
in the way Shyam kept it still
When He held up the Hill !

Keep your cloth up with one finger
try to mime His voice timbre
smile as He smiles, He’s in my mind
how the ropes of love do bind!

Spread open this veil,as the Hill,
give repair
to the hearts soaked in despair
the black curly hair, the red of His lips,
The golden  wrapping on His hips;

I ask the river ,the groves and cows
where’s the lover with His dancing eyebrows
O deer, o clouds, up in  the sky
where is our lotus-eyed?

Night after night   (R)
Day after day
exchanging glances you and us
right under there,
never before our love was let free
you know we could not dare
don’t hide, come back, we can’t bear.

SB 10.30.2 “As the cowherd women remembered Lord Krishna their hearts were overwhelmed by His movements and loving smiles, His playful glances and enchanting talks and by many other pastimes He would enjoy with them. Thus absorbed in thoughts of Krishna the Lord of Ramaa, the gopis began acting out His various transcendental pastimes”.

  1. Beautiful! I love this stanza: "I ask the river ,the groves and cows
where’s the lover with His dancing eyebrows
O deer, o clouds, up in the sky
where is our lotus-eyed?" Very sweet meditations. I can't wait to hear it set to melody. :)
